Indonesia Track & Trace Requirements: BPOM and the TTAC System
Indonesia's National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) has established requirements for product identification and authentication (serialization) using GS1 standards. The BPOM's digital track and trace platform is called the Track and Trace Anti-Counterfeit (TTAC) system.
Product identification regulations took effect in December 2023. Product authentication will be rolled in two phases: Narcotics and psychotropics (e.g., antipsychotics and antidepressants) must be serialized by December 2025, and all prescription drugs, including biological products, must be serialized by December 2027.
About Indonesia's Track and Trace Requirements
Indonesia’s requirements for product identification took effect on Dec. 7, 2023:
- The regulations apply to traditional medicines and over-the-counter drugs (as well as cosmetics, supplements, processed foods, and some raw materials).
- Products must be labeled with a QR code that identifies the product in the market and verifies that it’s legal.
- Codes must contain a Marketing Authorization Number and an NIE, or Nomor Izin Edar (“distribution permit number”), both issued by the BPOM.
Requirements for product authentication will take effect on Dec. 7, 2025, and Dec. 7, 2027. Prescription drugs, including biologicals, must be labeled with a GS1 2D DataMatrix code that includes five data points:
- A GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)
- A Marketing Authorization Number from the BPOM
- A production code or batch number
- An expiration date
- A serial number
